St Pierre des Clars

On the outskirts of Bizanet, in the commune of
Montredon lies the Chateau Fort of St Pierre des Clars also known as ‘the
Castellas’. There is nothing much left but the remains of the wall enclosing a
square dungeon.
The chateau must have been built during the 9th
or 10th century, probably as a roman look out post. Its situation is
easily seen from afar catching the light up on the hill. Its position and
strategic location explains the importance placed on the fort during the Middle
Ages when in the ownership of the Viscounts of Narbonne. The chapel is
mentioned in 978.
In the second half of the 15th century the
Chateau of St Pierre des Clars became sovereign property. In 1477, Louis XI
bequeathed it to his first doctor, Claude de Moulins, for services rendered.
It remained in his possession until 1493.
In the second half of the 16th century
during the religious wars in the south of France the city of Narbonne was given
the order to dismantle St Pierre des Clars and raise the fortifications to the
ground. And in 1575, the main building was brought down removing the threat to
Narbonne’s security.
The families de Neveys, de
Calvisson, de Biord owned the Chateau, its buildings, shepherd’s dwellings and
pastures until 1757. The lord of Montredon took over the lands belonging to St
Pierre until they were confiscated in 1804.
